Question about resubmission--same readers?

Postby writer503 » Tue Jun 25, 2019 5:42 am

I received an email encouraging resubmission of stories that were rejected in previous quarters, even if no changes have been made to the stories. I submitted to the contest for the first time last year and I have a story I'm considering resubmitting.

Are the readers for the contest the same in every quarter or are they different? If they are different, then it makes sense to resubmit because different readers may have different preferences. But if they are the same, could a previously rejected story still potentially be accepted in another quarter if no changes or only minor changes have been made?

Same readers. I know what the e-mail said, but if the previous story got an R I'd definitely recommend some editing. Read it over, make sure there aren't any major spelling/grammar problems, check for plotholes, make sure your personal info is removed, etcetera. You've still got time. :)

In addition, I'll add you'll have a much stronger chance writing and submitting a fresh new story. That one got rejected for a reason, or two, or three. But if you're going to resend an oldy that got rejected (and that one doesn't sound very old, so there's that), at least review your first two pages. It is highly likely there is something wrong in those first two pages that caused the rejection. First readers and judges will tell you you've got two pages to prove your story is worth reading all the way through. And you only get them to read those first two pages through if nothing stops them along the way.

Fresh. Original. Strong voice. Good command of the English language and storytelling skills. Character in a setting with a problem. Strong hook. No typos.
None of the common beginner mistakes (I've outlined some in my SUPER SECRETS topic).

Put your opening two pages under a microscope.

Or write a fresh story. : )
