Do the judges receive print or electronic copies of the stories to review?
Just wondering if they read a hardcopy or an electronic file.

Electronically, i guess, if you submit an electronic file. On the eighth page of the blog, in the article "Why You Only Got An Honorable Mention", paragraph 2 line 1, Dave Farland says "Right now on my computer, I have a story up."
See this link: https://www.writersofthefuture.com/why- ... e-mention/
Hope this helps :)

In the past we mailed stories.
Then they opened electronically. Some did that, some mailed.
Now, while mailing is an option, most submit online. Stories don't get printed out *.
Dave prefers e-copies.
*one quarter there was a problem with the submission engine. People e-mailed their stories to Joni who then printed them.

PLEASE send them electronically via the Wizehive system due to COVID-19 contamination concerns. Kary will thank you. Unless you want your manuscript doused in Lysol!

Thanks everyone! I am submitting online. I was never planning to send a hardcopy. I just wanted to know if the submissions were printed out for the judges to read, or if they read them on their PCs or devices. Thank you!

I imagine some people might think they stand a better chance with real paper. I kinda think the opposite. Which is why I often file paper tax returns. And also as a little protest. :)

It's not directly related to this, as WotF had shifted to electronic by the time I first submitted, but I do sometimes miss the process of printing and mailing in stories to a market. It felt like an event, to print, pack, and then go out to mail the submission in.
Still have my handful of collected paper rejection slips from F&SF around here somewhere, tucked into a hard-cover black 'n red notebook.

I get that. It would be way cool to have a "real" rejection slip. Preferably a personal one.

I don't have a personal one, but I do have a slip directly from GVG after (one of) his assistant editor(s) liked my story and passed it onto him. That was very encouraging to me at the time, even though it was still, ultimately, a form rejection letter.

The paper subs are always last to be read. Joni collects them all up in one box and ships them off to first reader Kary, which she now sprays with Lysol and lets sit a bit due to COVID-19. Dave has already started reading the electronic subs she has approved for him by the time she gets through the paper stack and sends those approved on to him. Surprisingly, there are many paper subs. I agree with Chuck: I think it is unwise to be last read, which is what's going to happen with paper.
