Multiple submissions...

Postby FabianLaClasse » Mon Dec 10, 2012 7:34 am

Hi guys!

I haven't yet made any submission to WotF, so my experience is a tad limited. Here's a theoretical question (I'd like to stress the theoretical-ness of said question, because, quite frankly I feel ridiculous even discussing prizes at this early stage of my writing efforts. Like discussing winning the lottery...): I've got two ideas that I'm working on, however, I know one is only supposed to submit one story per quarter. Now, I think I read somewhere that it's only possible to win 1 prize per year? So, what if I submit one story on September 30, and the second on October 1st? If my 1st story wins, say a 3rd place. Would that mean that I cannot make any more submissions? Or if it wins 1st place? Is one only allowed to have 1 finalist story?

Just wondering... wotf022

You can be a Finalist multiple times. If you're a Finalist, your story may be selected for publication.

You can only go on to win once ever, period. The winning story will be published and then you're no longer eligible to complete in the contest.

If you win, any other pending stories you have in any other quarters will be pulled from the contest.

It is encouraged to submit to every quarter, even if the results from your last submission haven't come back yet.

Awesome, thanks for clearing that up. Just to make sure I got this right; so you're saying it's possible to be a finalist more than once per year? Like, 2 out of 4 finalist stories being yours?

I understand that winning the grand prize can only be done once, and no further submissions can be made after that. However, what I wasn't quite sure about, is whether it is possible to have several submissions win prizes in the same year...

Just to be clear, being a finalist doesn't mean you place or win. Eight finalists are chosen each quarter by the coordinating judge, and three of these are then chosen as winners (1st, 2nd, and 3rd place) for the quarter by the judge panel (usually pro writers.) Once you make it to these top 3 spots for the quarter, then you are no longer eligible to compete ever again. You can be a non-winning finalist multiple times.

Occasionally, they do choose non-winning finalists to be included in the book. In this case you would get the free trip to the workshop and awards ceremony like the winners, but you would still be eligible to win in another quarter. I thinks that’s the only way you can be a repeat “winner.”

This.

Also, only one story per person per quarter is eligible for entry in the contest. So you can only have one Finalist story per quarter. You could, however, make non-winning Finalist every quarter and keeping entering until the day you die.

So:

You can enter 4 stories per year, one each quarter.

You can place as one of 8 quarterly Finalists four times per year, once with each story.

But if you win 1st, 2nd, or 3rd place you're out.

I think it's also worth mentioning that sometimes non-winning finalists are published in the antho, but this does not disqualify you. Like Stryker said, 1st, 2nd, or 3rd is the end of the road.
