Board PHP problems

Postby Dustin Adams » Thu Feb 12, 2015 11:09 am

Is it just me?
I'm having board trouble.
There's PHP notices up top, which haven't affected me until I tried to check on a PM.
I couldn't read it, but I did a cntrl+A and copy/pasted to a blank document then was able to read it.

Here's one of the errors I receive:

[phpBB Debug] PHP Notice: in file /includes/functions_module.php on line 449: include(): Unable to allocate memory for pool.
[phpBB Debug] PHP Notice: in file /includes/ucp/ucp_pm.php on line 83: include(): Unable to allocate memory for pool.
[phpBB Debug] PHP Notice: in file /includes/ucp/ucp_pm.php on line 375: include(): Unable to allocate memory for pool.

There's a new board version out. 3.13.
This one seems to be 3.0 or earlier.

It's updated for security patches and phone/tablets. I like it, mostly. Some cool new features like the avatars that appear more often and in fun places, but it's not quite as easy to navigate by phone.

Still, the security patches alone are worth the upgrade. And it should be free, unless this is commercial PHPbb, but even then it should be part of the package...

I see the text too... Gator says she's summoning Brad.

Erm, Gator, are you sure that's how you summon Brad? Maybe a ouija board?

That's for ghosts, silly. Image

Well. The phone, then? wotf007

I summoned Brad, but he said to summon Joni so she could summon the hosting service. Meanwhile I no longer see the problem. Anybody else?

Update: Email to Joni and others at Author Services is bouncing. We admins still have rights to delete spammers and spammy posts (as Facebook calls them), but our admin panel is blocked. It looks like they're having larger server issues, and this is a symptom. Kary has a call in to Joni to check on progress. We'll keep you informed.

I've reported to Joni, but she's non-technical. PHP means nothing to her. Maybe Brad has a contact with the hosting company.

I know this isn't pretty, but I find it comes and goes, so refreshing the page sometimes makes it go away.

Martin,
It should be in the phpBB code, although I don't know why it would suddenly malfunction. So, maybe it's server side if they changed the way it reads php?

I know just enough to get myself in trouble.

But I bet an upgrade of the phpBB software would do the trick. Maybe that's something the host would do, but back it up yourself before letting them try. wotf011

Aah, so all the power lies with The Brad.

I tried to search for an author from the main page yesterday and got a Red Hat Linux error, so there may be other issues on the server.

Back in my troubleshooting days, our first question was always "What changed?".
Given the forum is in its own subfolder, I doubt anything changed, without having been uploaded. Which is why the errors are so bizarre.
However, if there's an error with the core Linux, then it may simply be that the board is no longer compatible with the OS running the whole of the WotF site.

In which case the PHP software would need to be updated. (I'm sensing a theme here.) wotf011

The Brad is equally powerless. He suggests I contact Joni. Which I have. But she, of course, is in Workshop prep mode...

So we appreciate your patience! I hate to say it, but this may persist right up to -- or through! -- the workshop. If it's still going on then, I'll find some time to show Joni and ask how best to proceed.

Of course you know that this is bound to cross reference (NHS) PHP or (National Health Service) Practitioner Health Programme. This a service for sick doctors. Or, as they used to say in Rome, Quis custodiet ipsos custodes?

As a result there is no limit to the number of communicable diseases potentially being transmitted across the Net to your server. It could be suffering from an outbreak of:

Provisional Hair-loss Prognosis
Permanent Horrid Pimples
Public Hatred Psychosis
Perfect Hybrid Protozoa
Pluperfect Haematoid Pestilence

or even Polychromatic Hypertext Preprocessing.

See what you get for Personalising Horrendous Prose?

I'm having this problem as of the last few days, trying to get into my private messages. I can't read them at all right now, and those same error messages in the original post are at the top of the screen.

Yeah, a lot of people are having that problem. My guess is that nobody's going to be able to get to it until after the book launch on May 4th, though. Hopefully all will be well soon after that! wotf008

Exactly. Joni and the Three Deputies are all occupied, and Brad is preparing for deployment. But Kary showed Joni the problems, and Joni made a note to get with the hosting company.

We'll get to this soon, we hope!

In the mean time, I know this answer sucks, but... Try another browser? I see the errors on various flavors of IE, but the PM system is working fine for me.

My Chrome seems to work fine with the PM board.

And my Chrome does not work with the PM board.

Interesting... I'll have to play around with browsers.

Also, I can read messages from some forumites, and can't read messages from other forumites. I haven't done a formal experiment or anything, but it almost seems to be tied to *who* is messaging me. wotf017

I'm seeing similar PHP Notice messages to what Dustin posted. They show up in Chrome, Safari, and Firefox. I'm able to write PMs, but they sit in the outbox for a long while without getting sent. One of my PMs has been stuck in the outbox for the past 17 hours. wotf005

Edit: Some of the PMs got sent while others did not.

Ellie,

From what I understand, the message sits in your outbox until the person you sent it to reads it.
I don't believe that's a glitch.

So I have a PM but it's just not readable. The "window" it appears in is tiny with no ability to scroll down. Or reply to it. Or anything.
