Fixing the place up
So as long-time members know, there was a dark period. New users couldn't get their confirmation email. Existing users couldn't recover their passwords -- not even us admins, so I was locked out.
Brad fixed this by basically reinitializing the site to defaults, and then installing updates. All hail Brad!
But in the process, the site was reset to phpBB basics. A lot of little customizations were lost. For one, I can no longer find the link that shows all new posts and comments as my front page.
In the next few weeks, I'd like to fix the place up a bit. But to do that, I'd like your help.
For now, I ONLY want to hear about former features of the forum that are currently missing, and which you would like to see back.
Maybe next year, we can discuss some new features.
Thank you!

Re: Fixing the place up
New users can't make avatars, and the users who already have avatars can't change them. I'd like to see this functionality come back, please.

I changed the avatar settings to forbid remote avatars and allow uploading of avatars. Please give it a try. Thanks!

The avatar limit is set to 6KiB, which is so tight I can't upload a 180x180 JPG because it is 6,968 bytes i.e. 6.8KB. Might be worth easing up on it a little bit? Bandwidth isn't that expensive anymore
(this may be why my avatar has disappeared from my posts altogether, even though it still exists in my profile)

Was your avatar remotely hosted? I turned those off, thinking no one was using them, and that they might be risky. But I can turn them back on if people want them.

Re: Fixing the place up
Avatars were limited to 6K, also to 100x100.
Evil Martin bumped that to 16K and 180x180, and he allowed remote avatars.

Mine was remotely hosted, too, although I don't remember why. (It's possible the site didn't give us the chance to upload an avatar before, or that I had it hosted already and decided that was easier.) I'll be playing with avatars later, when I hop onto my computer proper. Haven't decided if I want to revive an old picture or draw a new one.

Found it! It's under the Quick links menu in the upper left: http://forum.writersofthefuture.com/search.php?search_id=unreadposts.
It used to be under the thread/post list. I'll leave it where it is.

When the forum gets busy, it's the only practical way to keep up.
