Ishmael wrote:Well, I almost made it inside twenty four hours. A mere 2,800 but better than nothing, which is what I had achieved in the past couple of weeks. Since I had no new ideas I took the essential idea from my last 'story in a day' and completely repackaged it in a new setting, with new characters and new conflict . Seems to have worked. I shall look forward to any exchanges that other participants may wish to make.

Way to go, Ishmael! I'm still looking towards tomorrow for my writing bonanza. I've informed the kidlet, who understands he should not pester me. Now that he's a teenager, he's so much easier to write around.

Wow, it's been a long time since I've posted! So, hello again:)

I'm in for this weekend's story challenge in the hopes that my writing muscles haven't atrophied too much--I sat down yesterday to write for the first time in months and got nowhere wotf003 So we'll see how this goes. I'm happy to exchange with anybody who wants to.

Happy writing wotf008

Congratulations to folks who have finished! I have failed my first goal, write a story on Friday. Complete meltdown of all creativity and a horrible start to a story. However, as a secondary goal, I'd said to write a story this weekend. Today's a holiday (at least here in the States) so I'm claiming it as still the weekend and jumping into a new story with both feet. There's twelve hours left in the day. No problem, right. Right?

Hah! I am fifteen hundred words into my second story. I found 'Winter' so uninspiring a topic that I couldn't help being inspired by it. It won't be completed in a day because it needs extensive research, but so far, as LD says, lots of fun.

Come on Rebecca. Keep up there! No shirking!

Yeah, Rebecca you can go for it.

Don't know what time it is there but here you have a bit less than four and half hours to finish it on the longer weekend.

But if you had 12 hours that's..what? 500 words an hour? 200? Still that is a 2,400 words story at the very least. Not too shabby.

Of course that means no taking breaks for napping, eating or chores or family or even potty breaks but hey, you knew the job was dangerous when you took it. wotf008

Didn't mean to but I just finished another 770 word story.

I'm working on e-publishing a set of seven fantasy stories. To my surprise they come out at 19,690 words so I decided to go for 20,000. A 350 word tale would take me over. So I started one but it came out a bit longer than I planned but hey, it's fantasy and kinda light hearted about a dragon that gets drunk.

I came back to say that I revised the story, to cut it back. I did.....

now it's 786 words.

Right! That's how I'm treating it anyway;) I'm probably still not going to make it but I'm feeling quite inspired by the story I'm writing so I will count this as a success wotf007

And now the second story checks in at 3,100. Wow! I don't know quite how this works, but last time I wrote three stories and this time I've already done two, but in between I could hardly write anything new at all. I guess it must be something to do with my competitive genes.

Who knows? Anyway, I feel good about these two. However, I have been known to feel good about stuff that is still partly in my head and not properly written down, so when everyone else is done, I have two for exchange:

(1) dystopian current fantasy / SF at 2,900
(2) dark ages fantasy at 3,200

Yes, you read number (2) correctly. Yes, it's still me here. The same Ishmael who annoyed lots of people in the spring by being utterly unable to comprehend this genre. Call it a revelation!

Well, I wrote a story. The writing of it was incredibly disturbing to the point that I would like to take it out and burn it. I have now learned precisely how *not* to write the story I was trying to write and will try again without the totally powerless protagonist and the creepy levels of ick that worked their way onto the page. Teach me to try and write a Halloween story. ACK.

Off to try again. I like the seed of the story, but holy heck, that first draft will never see the light of day.

I do hope that you didn't try to write a Halloween story without wearing a disguise? You probably should also disguise your style and use a pseudonym.

An interesting coincidence though; your story being about Samhain (Halloween) and mine (sort of) Beltane.

On the other hand, I am loving my take two. It even has series potential, which has never happened before.

It's time for a new story in a day challenge!

I will be setting aside this coming Saturday, April 12, to write a story in a day, and I would love, love, love to have some company on the way. While I'm aiming for Saturday, anybody can jump in for any day this coming weekend. It's hugely inspiring (to me, at any rate) to know there are other folks working on the same thing with the same goal. Also, putting it out here gives some excellent accountability.

Anybody interested?

Checking in! I did not write an entirely new story, but I did turn a sketchy 750-word flash into a hopefully better 2,600-word short story. Feeling good to have finally gotten that job done. It really needed doing.

Okay, now I am officially confused.

Which day were we suppose to do the story in a day? I thought it was today so I did write a story-more about that in a moment-but I just noticed that on the original post you said April 12, and I read your recent post that said you were working on it today, so which is it?

Anyway, I wrote a 1733 word story. I said I had already started two just before I read your challenge so since they were on my mind I used the same type of being for this story. I came up with the opening last night but by the time I actually started it I forgot a part so the story came out somewhat different than I originally pictured. I may go ahead and do the original idea even though the opening will be similar to this story.

I think this one will go to F&SF next weekend. I thought it would be under a 1,000 words but obviously I was wrong. Maybe the original idea will be.

Anyone want to trade off stories? wotf007

Wow, LD, you are most reasonably confused! I'd said this coming Saturday, April 12. Clearly, those two items do not exist in the same continuum! I actually meant today, but if anyone else thinks April 12 would be better, then go for it.

In the meantime, I'll be in the back corner resetting my internal calendar. Clearly some re-calibration is indicated.

Sorry about that!

And good job getting your story done!

So. Yesterday I started three stories and all of them were too weak to be true. I could write a better story about the underwater unicorns, but that was Stewart's idea. I went back through old story prompts and remembered why I didn't like them the first time. I am bereft of original ideas and bored by unoriginal ideas.

Fortunately I live in the EU. It is a well known tradition of the EU that if you set a deadline and can't meet it you simply stop the clock. This is how the EU never misses any deadlines. The clock that I go by is obviously my own clock since I can't see Rebecca's clock. My clock is officially stopped. The deadline does not expire until I say it does, right?

I sent that story out today. Instead of shrinking it as I expected to do when I took out a couple of lines that no longer deal with this story, I ended up adding probably a couple of hundred words.

I also felt--not sure where this goes on the forum but figured it could go here--like saying something like-- "And that is the 100th story to F&SF", but instead it's more like the 130th story there. I've never counted to make sure but it's at least the 125th story and could be # 135. I was sending stories back before Van Gelder bought it.

And at least I will have a story to send to BCS when I get it back--actually I could send three stories there. This one and the next two I'm working on.
