Onthepremises.com Change contest

Postby LDWriter2 » Sun Dec 13, 2015 10:16 am

Here is the info on this contest from their Newsletter.

CHANGES

One or more character(s) have to deal with some kind of significant change. It can be any kind of change you like, and on any scale, from a change affecting only one person (or one place, or one thing) to something affecting everyone/everything everywhere, or anything between those extremes.

Your challenge: Write a creative, compelling, well-crafted story between 1,000 and 5,000 words long that clearly uses this contest's premise. GENRE RULES: No children's fiction, no exploitative sex, no over-the-top grossout horror, and no stories that are obvious parodies of existing fictional worlds/characters created by other authors.

One entry per author. No fee for entering.

Deadline: Friday, March 4, 2016, 11:59 PM Eastern Time.

Hyphenated Words: If the hyphenated word is generally considered a single word, it counts as one word. (Like "twenty-five" or "jack-o-lantern.") Otherwise each part of the hyphenated word counts separately.

Prizes: $220 for first, $160 for second, $120 for third, $60 for honorable mentions. We will publish between one and three honorable mentions.

-------------------------
And I have plenty of stories dealing with changes that are under 5,000 words. One in particular jumped into the forefront of my mind. Just a few changes in it and it would be ready.

I have a story I could change for that, unless I change my mind.
Maybe I'll grab some spare change and go out for a change. wotf001

Um, don't all well written stories have their main character go through some sort of change? That's not really a theme.

Yes, but I believe they mean that change is the reason for the story.
You might send an already-written story, but I bet those who latch on to Change will pull ahead.

A werewolf story might do well here.
Or a sex change.
Moving to another planet.
Going from a farm to a city.

My guess is these things happen as a matter of course, not after an inciting incident.
For example, Luke going to Degobah isn't change, that's plot.
But him changing from farmboy to Jedi - that's the Change I imagine this contest is calling for.
Unless Luke says, "I'm tired of sand, sand, sand. I want to live in a swamp!"
Change.

I think you are making my point though. If you ask someone what the theme of Star Wars is, they won't say "Change!" For an epic sized plot, you need your character to make an epic sized change, thus farmboy to Jedi. When Frodo came back to the Shire he was so changed by the Ring he had to leave with the elves. You could go down the list of every story worth publishing and come up with something similar.

Of course some stories end with the character unchanged, but they tried to change and failed, or at least were strongly tempted to change.

How about this:

An external or physical change.

Granted, I'm guessing, but I didn't read it as a character who has changed by story's end, but a character who faces and deals with a change in the beginning. More than an inciting incident, or call to action, but a change. Something broken.

When I was 23 my house burned down.
Everything changed.

Yes, rereading their prompt, it does indicate they are looking for something like that rather than the typical character arc type of change. Thanks!

So I'm in for this. And my change isn't at the beginning either, so if the above discussion is correct I'm in error.

Bit late to the party here, but I submitted a story which already fit this theme eerily well.

Like Dustin I think they're asking for some sort of fundamental change that happens to (or is caused by) the character and their world, not just a character arc. (e.g. a story about the moon blowing up and what changes that would have on society; a story about a character trying to change a set of laws; a story about soup getting cold)

Maybe not the last one.

I do think a story where the change happens by the end of the story (or throughout its course) could do well too, so long as it's something fundamental and not just character growth.

Just now catching up on some posts. I too entered with a story I already had that could have been written specifically for the prompt. I think I got the anonymizing right, though after the fact I hope they don't intend the cover to be anonymous too, since I did that as I always do. Their way of doing things was just different enough that I wasn't quite sure I knew what I was doing.

Thanks to LD for posting the details. Otherwise I wouldn't have known about it.

Again I forgot about the contest. One problem with them giving us so long to enter.

Anyway, I came here tonight to check on something else. I saw my own notice. I had planned on doing something else but decided on the contest. I knew which story I wanted to send even though it needed some work. So I spent my time going over it changing and adding things I have learned about since I wrote the story.

wotf017 Like with WotF we shall see.

They won't say but as long as it isn't "that story".

Ah yes, I'm in as well, with a story that's a couple of years old but was the first thing I did that I was proud of. It fits the theme well--regarding changes in people's personality after SCI FI PROCEDURE--but we'll see. It's a bit creaky now, but it's not half-bad, and it's not like there are many other markets left to sub it to.

Good luck, people!

Oops, thanks for the reminder! Snuck my story in.

It's one I like as is, but I know others have issues with the start. I was going to try and change it, but I ran out of time! So the story is as I like it but no one else does. Maybe I'll finally find another person who does :P

Actually I counted five so if I was correct which while possible may not be true, I say yes.

Then again there could very well be seven and a possibly eight count.

Before I see who won from here--I of course didn't.

My listing here and I get nothing, not even an almost.

Probably not the only one who missed from here but at the same time by surprised if no one from here got in, must here do better.

Out as well. At least they were quick!

Top 15%... but out of only 321 entries, still kind of annoying. Don't get odds that good very often, when places like F&SF, Clarkesworld & Asimov's get 1000 submissions a month.

Ah well. At least I hadn't written anything specially, so no wasted effort!

I am shocked no one here got in especially with them having ten winners this time. Two were what they call "guest writers" Two stories that came oh so close and just needed a little help to get over the hurdle.

Ten winners and I wasn't even close.
