Fyrecon Master Class & Online Con Scholarships

Postby Wulf Moon » Mon Oct 12, 2020 5:56 pm

I hope you will join us for Fyrecon Online on November 12-14th, 2020. In addition to all the panels and readings, there will be Master Workshops! Martin Shoemaker & David Farland will be teaching there, and so will I. Rumor has it Dave and I will even conduct a one hour class together, should our schedules coincide. The convention is only $50 but get this! If you're financially challenged, you can apply for a master class scholarship! Dave and I both teach master classes that weekend that can help you win Writers of the Future. I hope to see some of you there--it's a unique year where you can attend conventions and take classes online with minimal expense!

Here's the convention info! I hope to meet many of you there! http://www.fyrecon.com

Hurry if you qualify for these scholarships--they include your choice of master class and registration to the con! You must have your application in by October 15, 2020!

I have a general question regarding this convention... If you are registered does that mean you have access to all that is offered during that time period? Or is an ala carte type deal? I could benefit from all the writing advice I can get from Farland, Shoemaker, and Moon for sure!

So far I've been collecting rejections... Hoping that will change!

If you pay $50 for the convention, you get access to the weekend panels but not the master classes. The master classes are a bit more, but include the weekend panels. Wulf might correct me but I think that's how it works.

Becky is right. If you have taken a master class sponsored by Fyrecon already this year, you were enrolled for free in the Fyrecon Online Convention November 12-14, 2020. If you didn’t take earlier master classes but register for any master class at the upcoming convention, you get registration to the con added for free. This is a $50 bonus. That’s what it costs to attend the online convention on its own. Like every convention, there will be panels, one hour classes, discussions, and readings. Those are included in the con. But master classes are not included, and require an additional fee. They run four hours for $79, and when you consider Fyrecon throws in the con registration with them, it’s really $29 for a four hour class taught by pros. You can’t beat that. Well, you can if you qualify for a scholarship. :)

So, $50 gets you the three day online con. $79 gets you a four hour master class AND the three day online con. Dave is teaching three master classes on indie strategy. Martin Shoemaker is teaching a class on story structure. And I’m teaching a master class on how to write the type of stories that win contests—especially this one. There’s only six spots left in mine; it’s going to sell out again. I hope those financially challenged here get the scholarships—here’s your chance to get specialized training. For others, invest in your education. Outside of WotF’s free online workshop, you won’t find less expensive instruction in the form of a teaching convention filled with master classes, panels, and discussions by the WotF coordinating judge and contest winners. This is a way to stop shooting in the dark with your stories.

In the general convention, I’ll be teaching one hour classes on Flow State, and Driving to Your Story Causes Accidents. I’ll also be reading “Beast of the Month,” a best of the year story from Third Flatiron.

Normally, coming to a con like this will cost you a thousand dollars easy in fees, airfare, and hotel. This is a unique year. Take advantage. Your career and writing skills will thank you.

All the beast!

My master class "How to Write Winning Stories that Take the Gold" sold out today. But there's plenty of others at Fyrecon Online to choose from, such as those by David Farland and Martin Shoemaker! And I talked to John Goodwin of Author Services today, and he said Joni is planning on being there with a panel on Writers of the Future! Here's your chance to get answers from the contest administrator herself on how things work! The three day convention on November 12-14th is only $50, but when you take any master class, convention registration is included at no additional charge! This is a great opportunity to get the same valuable information as the in-person convention, without all the airfare and hotel expense!

Secure your future! Take advantage of this marvelous opportunity to learn from professional writers and the WotF contest coordinating judge! Here's the link:

Cool! So YOU were the last one. I asked them who was last and they said somebody from England. Mystery solved! wotf007

I look forward to seeing you there, Alex! Sorry about the messy time zone difference! But we had one from England in the last class, and he held up! And one from Japan! (Looking at you, Ryland!)

See you soon! Don't forget there are handouts for you--if they didn't send you the code, let me know. And you are now registered for Fyrecon as well, so all the convention panels are open to you! I'll have one on Flow State that Dave is supposed to be joining me on, and I'm also teaching a one hour class on How Driving to the Story Creates Accidents.

See you there!

Re: Fyrecon Master Class & Online Con Scholarships

Postby AlexH » Fri Nov 20, 2020 2:53 pm

Fyrecon was great value for money for me at $79 including a masterclass with Wulf and all those extra workshops (which were really difficult to choose between). Given I barely took a break from 5pm to 3am UK time on the first and third days, I'm amazed I was able to keep my concentration for so long.

I've listed some of my favourite workshops below with at least one thing I found helpful that I hope helps others.

Wulf's first masterclass drove home the importance of some Super Secrets even more, and more again. It specifically hit me how much difference a unique and memorable main character can make to a story. I also love the idea of hitting the reader with something unexpected (but foreshadowed of course) - the option the reader didn't think about - at the end.

Rafael Hohmann gave some great tips on creating unique monsters and how to keep them interesting throughout a story. One of my favourite tips was to create a monster that upsets the predator/prey relationship. E.g. Stephen King's The Mist - mist isn't something that'd usually be scary. Another example; Godzilla is just a lizard - but so large, it turns the predator/prey relationship on its head. I ended up in three of Rafael's workshops and hope the one I missed will be available to watch.

Melissa McShane packed loads into her building tension through oppositional dialogue workshop. Choosing not to answer or respond to someone in a conversation can show who does or doesn't have power in a conversation and can be a good way to flip that power dynamic around.

M Todd Gallowglass talked about story structure and concentrated most on "the ghost from your character's past" - this is something unresolved from your character's past that mirrors the character's present. The structure is similar to other structures many of us will be familiar with. Here it is in context: Desire > Inciting incident > Conflict > Complication > Ghost > Need > Twist > Resolution.

Jodi L Milner gave out good tips on fantasy researching and worldbuilding. I liked her point about twisting things from reality. An example she gave is one thing that helped make Terry Pratchett's worlds unique to me. He was great at elevating jobs that people generally wouldn't consider as important and instead making others (e.g. doctor) seem the 'lesser' jobs.

Jayrod Garrett's "Worldbuilding for Inclusion" was insightful. BAME and LGBTQ characters shouldn't be there just for the sake of inclusion (an example that came to mind for me was the blink-and-you'll-miss-it lesbian kiss in The Rise of Skywalker - that's not really inclusion). And stories should ALWAYS be about the story. Inclusion isn’t the story - it’s part of the story. Something I hadn't really thought about in fiction - inclusion isn't just racial/ethnic. E.g. it's politics and religion too. Jayrod also said we should start small - start with what we know about inclusion - more will come as we write more. One example for me would be when I visited Georgia (the European country). On public transport, I was usually the only non-Georgian and with my long blond hair, I was stared at A LOT. That was uncomfortable at first, and I got a smidgen of an idea of what it's like to feel different. I met someone who got so freaked out by this (he had much lighter blond hair than me), he left Georgia early.

I should say Georgian's are amongst the friendliest people I've had the pleasure of meeting. I believe I was invited to stay in someone's home after getting the wrong address for a B&B! Georgia is one of my favourite countries without question and also a beautiful country. It should really have inspired at least one of my fantasy settings by now...

Anyway - they're the workshops that stuck in my head most. I have lots of notes to review! My only regret was I didn't get to chat to people more outside of workshops, so I was pleased I got to chat to Wulf after his masterclass, and I enjoyed that a lot too.
