Just out of curiousity...

Do you past WOTF winners (for the writing portion) tend to buy the original artwork made for your story? Besides the obvious benefits of winning, a illustration of your work sounds neat to me, suitable perhaps for framing or as inspiration above a desk.

well, just an illustrator's comment here ...

I believe BOTH the Writer and Illustrator receive a lovely, enlarged, framed print of the story's illustration (from the contest) It's lovely.

Some artists are digital, so the only "original" resides inside their computer. Anything else is a print (and again, the contest gives us a killer print) so there's no "original" to buy.

And MY original illustration for #27

http://iof25.com/sites/default/files/people/Scott/gallery/iotf_final_hargrave_this_peaceful_war%20I%20sent%20Meliva.jpg

Image

is a ratty little drawing on a mis-shapen piece of art paper, wotf018 whited out, with pencil lines I could never really get rid of to the naked human eye (but could mostly Photoshop out after I scanned it)

As an original piece of art it would hang upon any writer's wall and eat deeper into their writer's soul than any raven perched on any bust of Pallas Athena!

Alas, it can't all be museum-quality objects of beauty in and of themselves!

Here though is cool art from past IOTF winners:

Wow that's awesome about receiving a print from the contest! I like the illustration you did, it's very detailed...I have no idea what kind of story it illustrates though. Man struggling against his nature? Man is sent to hell? Man tormented by visions of terror and unearthly creatures? The link is great too, there's some very talented artists passing through here.

Thanks for the kind comment re my art!

I was honoured to illustrate WOTF winning writer Patty Jansen's story "THIS PEACEFUL STATE OF WAR"

... and it was illustrating ALL those things! (Except the protagonist is female) So maybe I hit the chords i was trying for?

Naw you did, just hmm.... to my eyes the guy at the top of the page dominates the illustration and everything "under him" is what he is experiencing in his mind, or what he is being subjected to. Looking closer though the woman (if it's a woman, I got it wrong once already) at the bottom right of the illustration may be the protagonist of the story dealing with monsters/demons/dangerous conjurations of some very dark places...Is that closer to it? haha.

Awww ... You should read Patty's story in #27!

#1 because it's a great story and #2 because you're pretty much dead-on interpretting elements I was trying to capture and showcase FROM the story.

Thanks!

Heh, I am playing Baldurs Gate: EE and that's the opening quote on the main screen... well, not quite *that* quote but close enough.
