Audio Books

I'm taking a trip across the country via car (about 15 hours). I'm looking for an audio book I can get on my iPod that is super engaging to help me stay awake. Now I have a never-ending list of novels I would like to read, but I'm not looking for a good book - I'm looking for something that translated well into audio book format and was entertainingly presented.

I haven't ever listened to an audio book before, so I'm open to all suggestions.

This might sound kind of silly, but my recommendation is going to be based on nostalgia.

When I was a kid, my family and I traveled cross country in a motor-home for a month. I know we listened to a lot of audio books on the way, but Jurassic Park and the Lost World still stick with me. I know they're popular old favorites, but I remember how engaged I was while listening to them. Sure, the fact that I was a kid might have played into it, but they certainly did keep me awake.

The Harry Potter books as read by Jim Dale are truly a marvelous listen.

The Dresden Files on audio are awesome (and narrated by the actor who played Spike on Buffy)

Let me make a plug for some of the old time radio shows at The Internet Archive. I drove from Michigan to San Diego and back with those for company. Dimension X and CBS Radio Mystery Theater were my favorites.

Neil Gaiman is great on audio. I recommend The Graveyard Book, narrated by the author, and Anansi Boys, narrated by Lenworth Henry, whose voice Gaiman says he had in mind while writing the book.
