Requiescat In Pace ...

If it doesn't fit anywhere else, it winds up here.

Requiescat In Pace ...

Requiescat in pace, Steve Jobs ...

Obviously, the passing of a mind and a vision that shaped the modern world and will shape the future ...

Steve Jobs in his own words ...

Your time is limited, so don't waste it living someone else's life.
Don't be trapped by dogma — which is living with the results of other people's thinking.
Don't let the noise of others' opinions drown out your own inner voice.
And most important, have the courage to follow your heart and intuition.
They somehow already know what you truly want to become. Everything else is secondary.

...

It was the mid-1970s, and I was your age. On the back cover of their final issue was a photograph of an early morning country road, the kind you might find yourself hitchhiking on if you were so adventurous. Beneath it were the words: "Stay Hungry. Stay Foolish." It was their farewell message as they signed off. Stay Hungry. Stay Foolish. And I have always wished that for myself. And now, as you graduate to begin anew, I wish that for you.

Stay Hungry. Stay Foolish.

Thank you all very much.

I was in Tokyo when he passed. The next day the Apple store's front was covered in bouquets and stickie notes.

Loved and hated by many, he certainly made his mark.

Rest in Peace, Christopher Hitchens.

Constantly infuriating, imo, but always insightful and entertaining, I suppose. And an interesting "contrarian" as so many of the obits phrase it.

Anyway ...

Hitchens about his facing his disease (Anderson Cooper)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LgCq2T-v-Mo

And this moment, which I must say is worthwhile both as a moment of eerie powerful filmmaking and an insight into a unique human intellect:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E9TMwfkDwIY&feature=related

I sometimes think about how the AIs will consider us, consider our human consciousness versus theirs, and I'd offer that moment of rising music and a conversation in the back seat of a car as a moment the robots may never understand!

believe ... don't believe ... but please just put down the smokes!

But ... whatever. Rest In Peace, CH, or perhaps it'll be wake up and say "Well, this is pleasantly and utterly unexpected!"

But now I'm just gettin' weepy ...

Hitchens was one of the loudest voices of reason, one of the four horsemen of the apocalypse. I am absolutely crushed, but unsurprised at his passing. He looked death in the face until the very end was ever unrepentant. He will be missed.

The Souuuuuuuuuultrain! I'm Don Cornelius, and as always in parting, we wish you love, peace and soul!"

They were saying he started the whole SOUL TRAIN thing with an idea and $400 of his own money.

Huge pop cultural impact ... on just an IDEA, hard work, and a dime.

Kindah like self-publishing, one might suggest. Or writing or illustrating anything.

Idea, vision, hard-work and stick-to-it-edness trumping ... everything else. wotf008

Thus passes a true giant of the human Imagination and the genre ...

Others tweeting tributes included writer/director Cameron Crowe, who simply quoted Bradbury's own words: "'Don't talk about it... write.' Ray Bradbury."

Leo Dillon, Celebrated Illustrator of Children’s Books, Is Dead at 79 ...

Leo Dillon, who with his wife and longtime collaborator, Diane, was one of the world’s pre-eminent illustrators for young people, producing artwork — praised for its vibrancy, ecumenicalism and sheer sumptuous beauty — that was a seamless amalgam of both their hands, died on Saturday in Brooklyn. He was 79.

http://www.nytimes.com/2012/05/31/books/leo-dillon-illustrator-of-childrens-books-dies-at-79.html

I've shared it elsewhere, but Leo and Diane Dillon's art was an early and powerful inspiration to my own imagination and dreams (from a childhood encounter with DANGEROUS VISIONS) ... and later their insightful notes as judges of the IOTF contest would be very much appreciated and encouraging (and valued forever) for me!

Rest in Peace, as you slip off into Greater Dreams and Realities, sir!

Go In Peace, vaya con Dios Andy Griffith.

Lovable and deeply heart-warming as Andy Taylor (a show as enjoyable and timeless today as it was almost 50 years ago imo) ... but I liked the dark version of Andy too.

Pitiful and scary both in A FACE IN THE CROWD

When I was knee nigh high to a grass hopper and all that I loved these books. They were one of the ones that got me to love reading so much. Looks like there may have been some I missed.

Along with what was at that time known as Alfred Hitchcock presents the Three Investigators . And a few others.

An aside here but I tried to title the link there but couldn't figure out how. But it worked.

Requiescat In Pace ...

Sally Kristen Ride

Image

"As the first American woman to travel into space, Sally was a national hero and a powerful role model," Obama said in a White House statement.

"She inspired generations of young girls to reach for the stars, and later fought tirelessly to help them get there by advocating for a greater focus on science and math in our schools.

Sally’s life showed us that there are no limits to what we can achieve, and I have no doubt that her legacy will endure for years to come."

Harry Harrison died.

Read SSR but I can recall the Homeworld Trilogy and Spaceship Medic and a few others. Well, I think I remember his Spaceship Medic there have been a couple along those lines.

So he got his own thread in another area of the forum, almost missed it my second look, way down the list already.

Armstrong commanded the Apollo 11 spacecraft that landed on the moon July 20, 1969, capping the most daring of the 20th century's scientific expeditions. His first words after setting foot on the surface are etched in history books and in the memories of those who heard them in a live broadcast.

"That's one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind," Mr. Armstrong said.

Manuel Rodriguez (March 22, 1940[1]-November 28, 2012[2]), better known as Spain or Spain Rodriguez, was an American underground cartoonist who created the character Trashman. His experiences on the road with the biker gang, the Road Vultures, provided inspiration for his work, as did his left-wing politics.

Spain Rodriguez, a cartoonist whose radical politics and hyperbolic macho imagery, all presented with sly humor, were influential elements in the rise of underground comics, died on Wednesday at his home in San Francisco. He was 72.
...
Mr. Rodriguez was part of a wave of artists — including R. Crumb, S. Clay Wilson and Bill Griffith, who created the character Zippy the Pinhead — who established the irreverent, profane, highly sexed, antiwar, anti-capitalist spirit of underground comics (often, in this context, spelled comix).

http://www.nytimes.com/2012/12/03/arts/ ... .html?_r=0

Just a smaller-scale note of passing from the worldstage from a few months back ... SPAIN RODRIGUEZ ...

Image

It's hard to find an image to share here that isn't nsfw ... the transgressive weirdness of his stuff, crude but crazily-intense ... but he was an early BIG influence on my comix-dreams!

RIP Spain!
