I debated linking this one here since the topic could irk some, but then I realized when I was reading the comments that it's a useful discussion to have with yourself and also to know what kind of writer you're listening to when seeking advice. In other words, if you want to be a career writer, listen to career writers further down the path. If you just want publication, listen to those writers. I wonder how much confusion and bickering on the Internet about "the right way" comes from difference in goals.
