F&SF has a new editor--and now does e-subs!

Postby s_c_baker » Wed Jan 14, 2015 1:12 pm

In case you've not yet heard the news, allow me to post this link: http://www.locusmag.com/News/2015/01/fi ... or-of-fsf/

Charles Coleman Finlay has been named editor of F&SF, beginning with the March-April 2015 issue. Finlay is well known as an author, and guest-edited an issue of the magazine in 2014. He takes over from Gordon Van Gelder, who will remain publisher.

Finlay has more details on his blog at http://www.ccfinlay.com/blog/the-new-editor-of-fsf.html (including a link to the electronic submissions form!)

Stewart, that's great news and thanks for the link! I'd always ignored F&SF because of the paper subs, but now there's another pro market for me to try to break into and that's really nice!

I'd already heard about the e-subs both at the forum and Grinder, but I hadn't managed to find any mention of it on the F&SF page itself, and anyway I didn't have a story ready to send by Jan 15th. But now it's forever, and I've got the link, so it's great! wotf007

Not that I have anything against Mr. Van Gelder of course, indeed, I really don't know the fellow at all. It's just that the whole print out your story and mail it across the Atlantic thing was kind of old. wotf005

Kreeeee

I'll fly another story by him

A couple of things to say:

First of all: I just got an E-mail rejection from him and it was late. He said there were talks that he would be a guest editor again.

Second of all: The returns may slow a bit even with E-mail now. I think it took over a week and a half to get his back to me.

Third of all: My turn.

This is great. Living here in Vietnam made snail mail submission to F&SF pretty much impossible. And even if it did manage to get through, to cost to mail a story over was prohibitive.

I have a story with him now actually. So fingers crossed.

Great news! I just submitted a flash piece to them. Looking forward to attempting some longer pieces, as well. Much nicer to do it electronically than physically mailing.

Awesome! I live all the way in Singapore on the other side of the planet (literally), and the printing + postage + waiting time just wasn't worth it with paper subs.

I was really glad to see that they take e-subs now. It's so much more convenient for writers. My first C. C. Finlay rejection had a nice compliment, which is always so appreciated. I went online to do another. When I saw it said there's a 15 day waiting period between submissions, I first took it to be a waiting time for responses. A double take had me realizing it probably means to wait 15 days before su
bmitting again. From date of prior rejection? The wording threw me a bit. Even with 15 days between subs built in, they're still what I consider a pretty fast market.

What's really insane about it is Finlay reads everything himself. He has no slushers. wotf003

Amazing but that means I need to wait for a few more days to send in a story.

Particularly amazing considering he sends out such a lot of personals and such detailed ones too. I haven't got my latest sub back yet but the one I sent last time had a great personal that described exactly what he both liked and disliked about the story.

Yeah, I was wondering about that. I thought he might be one of those editors who give rejections if the first page doesn't hold them, but the high rate of personals suggested that he actually reads everything; and then I wondered if he had slushers, and if he doesn't... that's amazing, given how fast he gets through the queue.

I think Finlay must have borrowed Joni's cloning machine. It's the only logical explanation.

When I did a new sub tonight, he had clarified the 15 day waiting period, saying if he responded after 15+ days it's okay to sub again right away. I was waiting an extra 15 days, then forgetting about it. (I'm not entirely awake and may have garbled that a bit. It's on the submissions page and easy to see.)

I've noticed this, too. I also used to wait an extra 15 days but now I see there's no need. Since his rejections take more than 15 days anyway, it's OK to send him another story as soon as he rejects the previous one. (Well, not to be too pessimistic, as soon as he accepts the previous one, as well.)

I think I saw somewhere a comment that the system had told an author they could not submit for two more hours. (I thought it was here but can't find it again).

So it seems like the system will track this for you. :)

Just got my first rejection from Finlay. Greatly impressed with the amount of personals he's giving out. His comment accurately hits a weakness of my writing, so I'm going to analyze before sending out again.

In the midst of drinking my wotf035 wondering if a story is accepted by the magazine I surmise this would count as one of the three max short stories allowed to have published and still be eligible for the WOTF contest? It does pay from 7-12 cents a word. Also, the e-sub http://submissions.ccfinlay.com/fsf/ only allows the selection of Fiction, so why is there even a selection button?

I've seen their submission system at other magazines, so I assume it's third-party. The client controls what shows up in the options box. For F&SF it's just happens to be one option.

Yes, F&SF has been considered a professional market by the contest and SFWA for a long time. I'm just a little fuzzy on the exact rules for flash fiction(when paying less than $50.)

Got back my rejection, as expected no comments. I was hoping my timing would be such that he would have cleared up most of the backlog by the time he got to mine and be able to say something. Nope, by what he did say it sounded like he has cut the comments permanently.

At least he said to send another story--something as small as it is.

I noticed that when I went on the site a few days ago but thank you for posting this on here. I am submitting my story to them this AM. My sister suggested this particular story might appeal to the F/SF folks. All my beta readers loved it. My sister (who is the English major) said she could find nothing wrong (grammatically or structurally) other than my story being too detailed in some parts but the purpose for the descriptives are validated later on. Crossing my fingers, if the editor does read stories in their entirety I am confident he will be pleased. Pleased enough to pay me for the story is another matter entirely. wotf007

Rats I forgot the exact date--I was going to send in one story today the 31st. I had already checked and didn't have any that I would want to send in that Findlay hadn't read. But last night I thought that there were two or three flash stories I might be able to add one hundred to three hundred words or so to and put them significantly above 500 words. I'm not sure how he feels about flash so I figured close to a thousand would be good. But my memory blew it, or decided to play games with me.

So they wait. If WotF had sent a rejection, as a couple of people got, I would have sent in that one but it could be another week plus before they say. So no on that one. If I do get a straight rejection or even a HM I may slap my face and say "What took ye so long?"

I did the exact same thing, LD. It completely slipped my mind, until after he closed. I understand why he does it, but it's not easy to keep up with. I have about a dozen things out right now, at least. Waiting to hear back from those should be quite enough for the moment.
