For instance, would a crime story with fantasy elements work for this?
They dig into the genres a bit on their submission page.

Blargh. I had something going for this, then it spiraled way past the word count and turned into its own thing.
Into the trunk this half-finished American Gothic piece goes.

Haha, I know the feeling. One of my potential subs for their Time Travel anthology turned into my current WIP (a novel).

Thanks for the link. I had an idea I'd been mulling over for a while that I ended up writing for the epic fantasy volume. Any one else submitting to these anthologies?

New call from Flame Tree, guys! Detective Thrillers and A Dying Planet. As of this volume, they'll be paying 8 cents/word for new stories and 6 cents/word for reprints, so it's totally worth the attempt either way. Deadline is August 18th.

Hmm, just happen to have one of each-actually two of the second one. Not sure how much the Detective one is a thriller but it's my first attempt.
Hmmm(again) have a thriller that has a police officer in it. Wonder if if it is enough.
Working on turning Lead into Gold.
