Yah, I can get used to being a "regular" in the genre's most venerable, most widely circulated print magazine.

Santiago Dawn is the second story I ever sent to the contest and received a straight reject. I heard today that the Canadian semipro magazine Neo-opsis will be buying it.

They only open for submissions at very limited times. They pay 3 cents/word which is a half-decent rate. I don't think I ever sent this story to any of the big magazines. It's just not that type of story. I can't read the ending without feeling emotional, but it's a cute story that doesn't fit the high end of the market.

I can now make it official. Contest judge and award-winner, and also one of the elder statesmen of the genre, Mike Resnick, and I have sold our collaborative story, "Peacekeeper," to Ian Watson, who is editing THE MAMMOTH BOOK OF SF WARS. This collaboration came about largely because I was a WOTF winner, where Mike and I first met, he noticed my Dress Blues on awards night, and remember me months later when he was asked to contribute to this military SF anthology. Ergo, "Tap, tap, hey kid, you seem to be going places, you're also Army, got any mil-sf stories you want to work on with me for this project?" The answer was, naturally: hell yes!

And talk about learning.... you haven't learned until you've worked on a co-project with a man of Mike's calibre. Wow, humbling. Back to school time.

A 10% acceptance rate is exceptional! I hope it will keep up, but don't be shocked if it takes quite a few more rejections before the next sale comes.

As for the etiquette, there's no need for a thank you, but acknowledging the sale, verifying your contact information, and asking if they need anything from you (with a thank you at the end) isn't out of line.

Never send thank you e-mails. It clogs up e-mail boxes. However, do respond promptly to any correspondence they send YOU. You can thank them then if you'd like.
