Way back in the late 1990s when I was teaching economics, I remember explaining to my students that the politicians had wisely drawn up a set of entry criteria for the new single European currency and then unwisely ignored their own rules when it turned out that hardly any country would meet them by the set date (or indeed at all.) 'You will see,' I told them 'that this system will now generate intolerable internal strains because these foolish people think political will can over-rule economic forces.'

Alas today I find myself entirely surrounded by people who it turns out held my view all along but can't remember me saying it at the time. However, if I could have chosen the time to be proved right I would have tried to avoid a time when the Dodecanese were trying to cope with a refugee crisis.

I do hope you're right and we are all able to come through it together.

In my opinion, it's quite impossible to have a financial union without a political union. It creates all sorts of tensions and the governments are unable to run their own countries, since they are unable to choose their own financial policies. People have elections and then they are actually governed by some bureaucrats in Brussels. If there was a real political union there would be a real elected European government and most of the woes that plague us would be gone. Unfortunately, I don't think there's any politician in any country that pushes for political union. Maybe in the next century wotf012

I was surprised. I hold my breath for the good news/bad news e-mails, but this time a straight acceptance on a flash.
The story is called, "A New Man In Time For Christmas" so maybe a December release? wotf013
