Almost Success - The "Mixed Feelings" Thread
Re: Almost Success - The "Mixed Feelings" Thread
Mine went "Under Review" yesterday. It's currently out 107 days.
I expect my form rejection will arrive soonish.

Re: Almost Success - The "Mixed Feelings" Thread
Welcome to the 'Newly Under Review' umbrella. Lots of room in here to hide from incoming rejections.

Thanks for the umbrella. It's helped me hide for just a while longer.
Looks like they're having a weekend slush party at Asimov's.

Re: Almost Success - The "Mixed Feelings" Thread
I guess a personal from Asimov's doesn't really count; they're all personals now they're sending out the rejections again... but I'm pretending it does!
I think that umbrella might have broken under the weight though

Tamlyn, was it the "nicely done, send more" one? If so, that's great!

It did have a "I look forward to your next one, though"

LOL. I got the same exact sentence at the end of my rejection, yesterday. It was from Asimov's editor Ms Sheila Williams, so I thought that was a good sign, but I guess it was just a classier form rejection.

Eh, still better than what I've been getting from Asimov's.
The next story will do better

Even classier form rejections are an upgrade from standard form!

Thanks, LD, and everyone.
Yet, if this is "almost success" yet again, it is getting very wearying.

Rolls eyes upward--that was suppose to be you two.
But I would suspect that if I was ever in your spot I would agree you sentiment. But usually when someone is there it's only a matter of time before something breaks.

Re: Almost Success - The "Mixed Feelings" Thread
Just got a nice personal rejection from Tor.com.
They said they "held this longer than we hold most stories, because of the deftly woven initial suspense and the truly horrific plight of [my character], which just keeps getting worse." But basically the pacing was too slow in areas, so it's not a good fit. "Please send us more of your stories in the future! You have skills that we certainly like to see, and you know how to build creepy aliens with the best of 'em."

Got my personal rejection for the F&SF CC Finlay issue. He seems to be doing mostly personals, but it's still nice.
This is the story that got me the higher tier from Asimov's... and was rejected in the first wave of quarter 4 here. Writing is weird

Is that Fantasy and Science Fiction or another F&SF? I missed it if they doing a special issue like that.

Yes, that F&SF - CC Finlay is guest editing an issue, and he took electronic subs.
Re: Almost Success - The "Mixed Feelings" Thread
Yeah, thanks Preston!
Will send out to the next market; just trying to decide if I should tighten it up first.

That sounds like you were really close with tor.com, Jeanette! Better than my personal from them. And I agree with the creepy aliens part.

Hey ho. A personal from Shawn Garrett at Pseudopod, telling me "it was a very near miss."
He held it a good while and I was beginning to think he must like it. Now, who do we know that likes the sort of things that Pseudopod likes,

Re: Almost Success - The "Mixed Feelings" Thread
(Long time lurker, first time poster)
Hello, fellow wordsmiths!
I have a submission at Assimov's at 38 days, and today it just switched over to "Under Review." I also sent something to Apex nearly four weeks ago and received a response within two days stating it was being forwarded to the Editor in Chief, Jason Sizemore. Don't get me started on my 68 day wait for a response from Analog...
Does anyone have any experience with Apex, and--more specifically--Mr.Sizemore's typical response times?
Thanks in advance!

No, but getting forwarded to the Editor in Chief is much better than I've had there. My typical response there is a 7-day form rejection.

But, I'm new to this. If nothing else, maybe this will teach me to be patient...though I sincerely doubt that.

Re: Almost Success - The "Mixed Feelings" Thread
38 days at Asimov's is average for them, maybe even a little fast. 68 days at Analog is 40 to 60 days short of their recent response times. Patience is indeed the watchword there.
