Four in Thirty-Five (4 in 35!)
This is the official thread for the 4 in 35! club.
Here is where we dedicate ourselves to getting four entries into volume 35.
The rules are thus: We support each other for Q1. Q1 is traditionally the thinnest quarter, which our guess has been because of the holidays and travels, etc. (Start now!) So, first order of business is to aim for Q1. Members will encourage, and optionally offer to critique both 450s and whole stories. The first one is the hardest, and most important for momentum for:
Q2. Can't break the streak, right?
If you need some brainstorming, or someone to bounce ideas off of, pick a member and send a PM. Or e-mail. Or just sound off. Q2 is just as important as Q1!
Q3. Over the hump, we are, yes... Now it's getting easier, right?
Q4. OK, so we've made it this far. Let's get that final story in!
Exception to the rule: You win or pro out. If this happens, you are exempt, but you are our champion! You win, by winning, and we shall salute you. But please feel free to stop by and encourage, because that's what we'll need.
So, who is with me?!

I'm in! My weak spot seems to be Q2. It's the only quarter I've missed since I started, but I've missed it two years running.
No excuses, this year. We'll get it done!

I also wager that anyone who does this is going to see an improvement in their results. It'a hard to write consistently and not get better.

I've been missing in action but I'm ready to take the plunge again!
4 in 35! looks like the perfect place to start.
Now, I just have to decide if this older story that I planned to give the Quickie Edit and shove into Q4 V34 at the last minute would be better kept for Q1 V35 with a more thorough edit.
I've missed the WotF Forem. Glad to be back!

Re: Four in Thirty-Five (4 in 35!)
I wanted to share some gratitude. Hope no one minds too much ;)
One of the many things this contest has done for me, is it keeps me writing. Every quarter since I started entering I have written and submitted a new story (2.5 years now), and from it I have also learned many new things. Things that have branched me off onto paths that help me learn and grow as a writer. I've always been a voracious reader, but now I read, read, read, and study all that writing in order to make my own stronger. I learned about critters (thank you Matt!) on the forum, and have started sharing my own work there and here, which has helped immensely. I feel the critiquing I do for others is in some ways more valuable than what I receive (although that's super valuable as well.) I sit at the feet of others who have gone before me, gleaning all I can from the nuggets of experience they drop. I am constantly exploring things other writers mention, new venues and paths (read rabbit holes) that led to me find duotrope and the submission grinder. Which then led me to begin refining and submiting the body of work I now have (because of all my WotF stories), Yay! And there is more, so much more, but those are stories for another time. In the end, should I pro out before I win, I still have the contest and this forum (so much this forum!) for moving me along my path. Writing brings me joy, and I have learned the journey is as valuable as the destination. For that I am eternally grateful.
Anyway, all that to say this. I'm in for all 4 in 35. I always was.
In awe and admiration,
~A

Likewise. I had a brain flash last night for a setting, so now I have work in mind for Q1 and Q2. I’m not one of those people with hundreds of stories pouring out of my head, so this challenge will be really good for my creative juice maker.

My pleasure :) may it serve you as well as it served me! FWIW I completely agree that critiquing other people's work is far more useful than getting critiques on your own; the latter helps you fix *that* story, but the former helps you fix your craft. It forces you to think *why* you're reacting the way you are, and it seems like the insight sticks better from that angle than it does from being told the same problem exists in your own work. Seems like you gotta arrive at the lesson yourself rather than just being shown the way, sometimes.
I'm (obviously) not in here, but I applaud all of you that are. Like KD says, even if the submissions don't win through for you, you can't help but improve from such consistent effort :)
Re: Four in Thirty-Five (4 in 35!)
I considered hedging my bet and not submitting my Q4 short story. I could continue editing it for 3 months and submit it for Q1 V35!!!
But I didn't. I hunkered down, polished it the best I could by midnight WotF time and hit SUBMIT. So, now I have to...you know...do the work a writer does, and begin anew for Q1.
Here We Go - "Once more into the breach, dear friends, once more."
Or as many more times as it takes!

34 was the first time since I started editing I wasn't in for all four quarters. It doesn't seem to have helped me much on the improvement front :p
But I shall try to get my consistency back with 35!

Re: Four in Thirty-Five (4 in 35!)
I know it's early in the quarter, but would any of my fellow 4-in-35ers be interested in a critique swap? I have a 6000-word draft that has gone through some revision, and would love some general feedback before I obsess over polishing.
